Gold coin, Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire) - Julius Popper, 1889. Obverse: The legend "Tierra del Fuego" and "Popper". Reverse: Pick-axe and hammer and 'AU 864 AG 732'. Surrounding legend: "El Paramo, Un Gramo". Julius Popper (1857-1893), Jewish-Romanian engineer, urban planner, explorer and cartographer, was a central figure during the "Gold Rush" period in Tierra del Fuego. In 1886, following news about discovery of gold in the area, he organized an expedition of 18 members and discovered sands rich in gold. Later he took over a piece of land in Tierra del Fuego. He used some of the gold to mint coins for use in the territory which he controlled; vf & scarce
